Want to Maximize Product Operations?
Recently, I've been deep into my POC with Jellyfish. Talk about a fantastic tool that consolidates data from Atlassian Jira, GitLab, GitHub and other integrations.
Do you ever wonder how your organization is spending money?
Using Jellyfish, you can define investments, like the picture below. Personally, we have investments defined a little differently:
- Innovation
- Tech Debt
- Support
- Infrastructure
- RFE's

When planning a release, we have a custom field in Jira for "Value Stream". We use this for roadmapping in Jira Plans. This gives us a way to view our investment in each Product according to story points. BUT Jellyfish tells us about the investment in $$$ spend for FTE's.
So, following an annual Product Strategy discussion, Jellyfish gives you a means to truly track those investments and adjust accordingly.
So, investment - covered. How about SDLC?
Well, I'm glad I asked myself, because THIS TOOL IS THE WAY. Jellyfish gives you a means to associate issues in Jira to what's in your source control systems and can clearly indicate any detachment between the two. Untracked work? If you work anywhere with multiple teams, you know at a higher level, it's not always easy to determine what teams are focused on.
This is not a means to scrutinize engineers for not associating tickets, but an opportunity for discovery and collaboration as to why there are detachments to create predictability for the future. Did a customer report a bug in production that's impeding their ability to use your product? Well, that affected the release and commitments within... so what happens next? A discussion!
There are so many different scenarios to cover. Maybe there is a lack of discipline in engineers associating Jira issues to their branches in source control. Maybe it's a lack of education. Maybe it's one of a billion edge cases that could be exposed so that organizations can have that level of transparency to help individuals work better together.
Another great feature is predictability with this tool. Scope, Effort and Projections for Epics/Features/Initiatives or whatever your org refers to at the top of the hierarchy. This uses a team's velocity, has an indication whether or not the team is on track, and it even offers proposals of what resources to consider bringing in for assistance - that are qualified because they are ahead on their commitments.
Very happy with Jellyfish! There are so many other features, like goals within the platform that could help organizations mature and track progress on the path to incremental improvement.
Book a demo with them, check it out. Probably one of the most valuable tools I've ever had the pleasure of working with.
